Chinese brush experiment

At the moment, I am working on a project which involves Chinese stories and I needed some brushes for the illustrations. My Google-fu did not yield any suitable results, so I set out to make my own. Pretty chipper with how they've turned out thus far.

Background texture and the calligraphy for "longevity" added for effect.

iPad sketches

Two posts in one day... and in the span of two days? The world must be upside down. Or it could be that I'm just trying to reaffirm my commitment to creating things and posting again.

Went to the first life drawing session of the year tonight. Took Cetus (my iPad) along, with a plethora of other materials. I've not given myself the chance to draw much on the iPad so that took most of my attention and time... when I was not taking/editing photos (that I was apparently not supposed to take, unbeknownst to me till AFTER the session - oops!!!).

There's this really neat app called Procreate, and I think I kind of love it. Has a nice textured feel to some of the brushes and the interface seems far more intuitive than other apps I've used. So I'll swing with that one for a while and see if I can't come up with anything better than this. Not only am I out of practice, I was completely out of my comfort zone, gah! These are the umm... "better" results from the session.

I have a lot of things on the backburner at the moment, but I'm slowly trying to work my way through them! Some of them are below! I feel like my style has evolved into something completely different lately... and I'm not too unhappy with what is resulting because of it.

Maybe I am finally be settling into something that is me, rather than trying to don the awesomness of those that inspire me at random. I will always find issue with my work, but this lessening and almost-absence of distaste and dissatisfaction with my work... it's a really nice feeling.

I didn't intend for the last three to end up with similar compositions... it just kind of happened. Guess I need to work on that.

I'll not leave it so long this time...

Getting out and drawing again has been a really nice change of pace despite that I am so ridiculously rusty at it. Since buying my car has meant pretty much no reason to use public transport or be stuck waiting for it, which was always the time I'd spend drawing people and things around me. Now I need to REALLY make the effort to go out there... I did this on Saturday at the local shopping center and overheard someone saying what I was doing in the food court was "so weird". There are worse hobbies however... and I was having fun, so nyah to them.

Below... some warmup doodles. I'm enjoying working with shapes and enjoying the fact that I'm enjoying just drawing again. For a while there it really felt like something I had to do rather than wanted to, and that is never right.

Flu has thrown all plans and regimes out of kilter these past few weeks. Nothing to do except pick up and keep on moving when one has the energy. Sad when you're so lethargic you can't even sit at a computer, who'd have thought that takes so much effort? Anyway, I'm on the mend and managed to pick my stylus up for a little bit tonight. Hooray.

I've been working on controlling some pre-exam nerves all morning... it started with tai chi/pilates/yoga, followed by coffee and breakfast, later some meditation and drawing. I've done the works this morning and although it's been a battle of wills I am feeling pretty good.

Figured I would post this lass, hopefully I can finish her with the same feeling I started this sketch with.... but not until later. We shall see.

I didn't draw nearly enough, but here's the last two things I did. Computer was fudged... rogue memory or some such, so I had to do it the old fashioned way with those things called 'pencils'.

Exchange art for the lovely and talented Amy Clark.

I was trying a different colouring technique... thought I'd post the process I'd recorded from the beginning. It's only basic stages unfortunately, but involves a lot of use of the lasso and gradient tool. Fellow artist and animator Mel Miller puts this technique to incredible use with her mad skillz! Check her out!

From what I've gathered, it can be a good technique to amp up one's flat colours instead of painting over them with a brush. I've found painting difficult and time consuming before, this feels less painful. Now if I can just make it look good....
